These guys don't seem too organized. Twenty-five minutes in they were still just barely touching on the basics of Image, imagecache, and Imagefield modules. Zero energy, lots of clumsy half-demos of the modules, and no good guidance on top of the demos. Pretty disappointing start. People keep leaving the room.
Takeaways
- Image module: Creates image nodes, and is good for uploading and managing galleries and sites with lots of images that need to be navigated. Also has a number of helpers.
- Imagefield: Attaches images to content nodes, but is not good for sharing images across multiple nodes.
- This disparity could be reconciled, in part, by using Image module with a Noderef field, right?
- imagecache: caches different sizes and allows some other manipulation of the image
- Image Assist: helper for embedding images in posts (tinyMCE only?).
- Is that really it? Ugh. Disappointment.
- Looking ahead, there is a plan to merge Imagefield and Image
OK, 50 minutes in they seem to have settled into something useful, at least for the people sitting close enough to hear well, see the slides, and interact with the panel. (Note to self: crowd the front). Interesting discussion about long-term plans and general problems with file-management in Drupal.
They're also getting into Video, finally, which is essential, but its a little hard to track what they're doing. I need to look into the latest progress with Media Field, Video Field, etc. They seem to be further along than they were in August when I last looked at them.
